An abstract sculpture by the artist Frank Stella has been installed by a Fassi crane outside 7 World Trade Center in New York’s Financial District. Entitled ‘Jasper’s Split Star’, the metal-covered sculpture was inspired by ‘Jasper’s Dilemma’, a painting that Frank Stella completed in 1962 as a tribute to fellow artist Jasper Johns.

Six of the star’s sides are solid aluminium, and six remain open to reveal shades of blue, purple and grey. One of the most influential American artists of the 20th century, Stella has been the recipient of numerous awards and honours throughout his career, including the National Medal of Arts, which he received from Barack Obama in 2009. His work can be found in the Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Tate.

Stella is one of the very rare artists to have had two retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the first took place in 1970, followed by the second in 1987.

The installation was carried out by a Fassi F1950RA.2.28 L816L he-dynamic crane. With a maximum lifting capacity of 129 tm, a hydraulic reach of 31.3 m and precision movement, the crane was more than up to the job of handling this prestigious artwork.

The sculpture will remain in situ indefinitely, so that the workers, residents and visitors of New York’s Downtown can enjoy it.
