Dust control turbine used to safe the Barrier Reef in Australia by Emicontrols

Emicontrols turbine, the V22Cloud, is part of a massive project alongside the Southern Cross University and Sydney Institute of Marine Science, to safe the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

The idea of this project is to shade and cool the corals by spraying a cloud of water mist over the reef and therefore reflecting more sunlight away from the ocean surface.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system but has experienced extensive damage caused by global warming. A warming planet means a warming ocean, one of the main reasons for coral bleaching.

As the world grapples with COVID19, the Great Barrier Reef is facing a crisis of its own – its third mass bleaching in five years. Southern Cross University and Sydney Institute of Marine Science have successfully trialled world-first ‘cloud brightening’ technology on the GreatBarrierReef. This aims to shade and cool large areas of the reef at risk of bleaching by spraying microscopic saltwater droplets into clouds to make them more reflective of sunlight.
